Berlin on a Budget isn't too hard to manage because there are so many free things to do in Berlin. One of those is to visit one of the many museums that have no cover charge to get in. Visiting a free museum is a perfect way to utilise your budget whilst still learning about this wonderful city. Below a list of the free museums in Berlin, PLUS a note about which of the mainstream ticketed museums have free entry days!

Alltag in der DDR: Everyday Life in the GDR - The Kulturbrauerei hosts this wonderful free museum all about life in the times of the German Democratic Republic. See our video here to learn more.

Young People Museum - In Schöneberg lies this permanent interactive museum, It's called The Young Peoples Museum but it is for young and old, celebrating Berlin's past and present.

Anti-War Museum - At this interesting museum in the suburb of Wedding, you'll find photographs, documents, and objects from the World Wars.

Tränenpalast - Otherwise known as The Palace Of Tears, this was a well-used border crossing from East to West Berlin, the place where people said goodbye to their loved ones. Steeped in history and now used as a museum about the popular crossing and the DDR. See our video here to learn more.

Daimler Contemporary -  At Potsdamer Platz you'll find this exhibition of artists from South Germany. There are 1800 pieces, by 600 different artists.

German-Russian Museum - A little outside of the city, but worth the trip, here you'll find Soviet propaganda, uniforms, documentaries. (closed Mondays)

Silent Heroes Memorial Center
This permanent exhibition, (Gedenkstätte Stille Helden) is about the persecution and plight of Jews facing imminent deportation, the stories when some of them decided to resist the threat by going underground, and the actions and motivations of the men and women who helped them.

Plattenbau Museumswohnung
The best way to see how people lived in the DDR (GDR) is to walk into this fully preserved DDR 3 bedroom apartment in Hellersdorf.

Museum Blindenwekstatt Otto Weidt
Hidden away in Hackescher Markt is the story of Otto Weidt and how he hid Jewish employees in his workshop for the blind and deaf. The exhibition is in the old factory where it all happened.

Allied Museum
The Alliierten Museum runs a permanent exhibition about the political relationship of Western Allies between 1945 and 1994. A great museum to see original pieces of the Berlin Wall and a guards tower and other historical artefacts.

Forum Willy Brandt Berlin
Willy Brandt was one of the most outstanding statesmen of the 20th century. This museum is an informative exhibition about Willy Brandt and the political developments of the 20th century.

Hamburger Bahnhoff - Free every first Thursday of the month  from 4 pm - 8 pm
The Famous Hamburger Bahnhoff: a comprehensive collection of contemporary art, which it presents in a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions.

KW Institute for Contemporary Art - Free every Thursday, 6 to 9 pm, and every first Sunday of the month.  This museum approaches the central questions of our times through the production, display, and dissemination of contemporary art. 

Ceramic Museum Berlin - Free every last Monday of the month. The KMB consists of around 8,000 objects plus extensive data, document archives and includes ceramics from the German cultural area.

Deutsche Kinematek -Museum of Film and Television - Free every Thursday, 4 pm to 8 pm. Deutsche Kinemathek has everything related to film and television history and also houses the Filmhaus, one of the largest specialized libraries in Europe.

Bröhan Museum - Free every first Wednesday of the month (free guided tour at 5 pm). Berlin’s museum for art nouveau, art deco, functionalism, and the art of the Berlin Secession.

Museum Ephraim-Palais - Free every first Wednesday of the month.

Museum Nikolaikirche - Free every first Wednesday of the month.

Düppel Historic Village - Free every first Wednesday of the month.
