The Story of Berlin is one of the most engaging history museums we have visited. The exhibits are there to be experienced not to bash you over the head with information and the guided tour of the Cold War nuclear shelter is a definite highlight.
The Story of Berlin is a fantastic museum where you can learn all about the German capital in an interactive and multimedia rich environment. With an innovative mix of original artifacts and modern technology, The Story of Berlin tells the tale of over 800 years of history, from the original founding settlement to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Each of the museum's 23 rooms will lead you on a different journey through a particular era of Berlin's rich and varied history.
One of the museum's highlights is a tour through an original Cold War bunker that was built in the 1970's in case of nuclear war and theoretically could still be used today to accommodate up to 3600 people in case of a major disaster or emergency.
If you have children, this is the perfect museum for you. All exhibits are designed to be touched, opened, and interacted with so you wont have to glue their hands into their pockets. Also, each of the 23 rooms in the museum have a bear hidden somewhere in the exhibit that the children have to discover and tick off in a booklet that can be picked up at the entrance. This leaves parents free to wander the museum at their leisure while their children dash searching for bears to tick of their page.
Open daily from 10am to 8pm, and conveniently located on Berlin's famous shopping boulevard, the Kurfürstendamm, a wander through this fascinating and thought provoking museum is a lot less like a history lesson than it is a stroll through the ages.
