Founded in East Berlin in 1950, the school has two locations and now resides in Berlin's famous Gendarmenmarkt after an extensive refurbishment is 2005 and at the Schloßplatz near Museuminsel.
In addition to the teaching divisions, the school offers over 300 events per year, including concerts, opera productions, class recitals, exam concerts, and competitions, meaning music lovers can be certain to find a performance to match their tastes. Occasionally events take place away from the school itself, so visitors are advised to check the location in advance of their attendance.
Tickets can be booked either at the box office, or via telephone. Prices vary depending on the performance, but students can normally enter for free.
