Stasi Museum
Berlin
The Stasi Museum isn't something you can reach by foot from your hotel - it's a few stops out of the Mitte centre on the U5, in the Eastern suburb of Friedrichshain-Lichtenberg. It is however definitely worth the short train trip. As you approach the building, it might feel a little sinister.
Inside, the exhibition shows some of the questionable surveillance methods and tracking technology used by the secret police to keep tabs on East German residents.
It costs about €5 to get in, and will keep you entertained for 2-3 hours. See the 1970's furnished offices where Stasi officials made devastating decisions about the fates of East Germans. Read about the history of the secret police and the consequences of their work. Some of the materials are written in German and English, so you can follow along.
