Description
On March 18, 1848, thousands of Berliners gathered early in the city seeking concessions from the king, including a constitution, free elections, and improved workers' conditions. The morning began with demands for press freedom already announced, but the crowd sought further rights.
Around noon at Palace Square, soldiers cleared parts of the square and took combat positions. When shots were fired, people fled into the streets as fierce barricade fighting erupted, marking the start of the Berlin Revolution.
This walking tour follows key historical locations from that period. The route begins at Schlossplatz and continues past Zeughaus, Neue Wache, Maxim Gorki Theater, ending at Gendarmenmarkt. Along the way, you will learn about the revolutionaries' achievements, many of which continue to influence Berlin’s democracy today.
