Buchstabenmuseum
Berlin
MUSEUM CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR RENOVATION
Enter the Buchstabenmuseum and you will encounter a huge collection of letters, from huge 2-meter tall giants to smaller ones, in virtually every colour of the rainbow. Many of the pieces which make up the main exhibition come from around Berlin, from shops or buildings no longer there, offering a glimpse into a previous era. Some are in great condition, and their neon lights still function, others, show the ravages of time and weather from a lifetime spent outdoors. The museum itself is located in a former East Berlin supermarket, and you can still see some interesting details of the original interior, from the cool rooms to the loading dock where the collection of letters continues.
Where possible, an attempt has been made to include as much information about the letter as possible, but this isn't a history museum. Exhibited out of context, often out of the intended order, here, the individual letter is celebrated, and for anyone interested in design or typography or even Berlin history, this will make a fascinating stop during your visit to Berlin.
