Mauerweg - The Berlin Wall Trail
The best way to get a sense of the Berlin Wall and the way it wound its way through the middle of the city is by bike. There are a number of bicycle tours who will take you on the trip and provide you with insights into the history, as well as some interesting stories from the time. Alternatively, you could hire a bike from one of the many Bike Hire vendors around the city and head around yourself. The route is completely sign posted so you don't need A grade orienteering skills but you will have to stay alert as it is sometimes easy to miss the signpost while you are looking at something cool.
The Mauerweg is around 155km and follows the entire path of the Berlin Wall around former West Berlin. It is not necessary to cycle the whole thing though, you can choose how much you want to see - for an easy half day ride we recommend riding from Mauerpark in Prenzlauer Berg to the Oberbaumbrücke on the river Spree on the border of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. On this trail you will see virtually every one of the main sights in Berlin from the Brandenburger Tor to the East Side Gallery and you will get a great impression of the way the inner city was divided.
