Magicum - Berlin Magic Museum

Berlin

Museums

Make sure you spend some time playing some puzzles at the Magic Salon. Some are pretty tricky but it is a lot of fun!

As you descend the stairs into the subterranean location of Magicum, the Berlin Magic Museum, you will be transported into another world.  A world in which powers exist beyond normal perception.  Explore subjects such as divination, incantation, alchemy, geomancy, herbs, potions and witches and learn about the magic rites present in the religions of the world.

Throughout the labyrinthine exhibition space you will find over 450 lovingly displayed artefacts, from Dutch witch scales and medieval torture devices, to African totem masks.  The items bear witness to the magical traditions of every continent and although more theatrical than academic, the Magicum explores the possibility of psychic energy and transcendental power.... while not taking itself too seriously.

A nice touch are the riddles and puzzles located throughout the exhibition space.  Requiring an ability to think laterally rather than logically, the puzzles help to put you in the right frame of mind to best approach the material.  You can also test your wits and your powers of perception by tackling some of the puzzles in the Magic Salon... if they prove too difficult the friendly staff will give you a nudge in the right direction.

Located in the cellar of the historic Hamburger Hof complex a short walk from Hackescher Markt, Magicum offers an interesting glimpse into a world of magic and possibility.  Fullfilling a life long dream, the museum was established and is run by performers Auguste Gischler and Rob Brown with the bulk of the exhibition coming from their private collection, amassed while travelling the globe.   From welcoming you into the museum, to explaining a solution to a puzzle, you will be as impressed by the museum as by the friendly, warm service, which is certainly a pleasant change from the usual sterile museum experience.
