Hauptstadt Oper
Berlin
This tiny little opera institution is situated close to Landsberger Allee: there is a hospital, a swimming pool, and a tax office nearby, and now this industrial part of former East Berlin has its very own opera company.
Hauptstadt Oper claims to be the smallest opera house in Berlin. No-one is arguing. Here, opera singers reassemble lesser-known musical masterpieces and the theatre director bakes cakes for her audiences. The performances here don't belong to the typical opera house crowd-pleasers: you'll find lesser-known works for smaller casts by Jacques Offenbach, Vivaldi, von Flotow, and Lehar, among others. There are opera galas, revues, exhibitions, and guest performances by visiting artists.
Hauptstadt Oper's adjoining café is open in the afternoons from Wednesday to Sunday, serving cakes that are homemade by the theatre director herself, Kirstin Hasselmann. Opera and cake? Sounds like a perfect afternoon.
