An absolutely fantastic experience. The atmosphere and decor is wonderful, calming and beautiful. There is soft relaxing music and everything just works together to make or more than just a dinner. The food was excellent, some were better than others but they were all great. The addition of smoked wood just for enhanced ambience with one of the dishes could've been a bit silly but it was lovely. We took the non-alcoholic drink pairing with various kinds of tees. It was not really to our taste but it was still pretty good and really interesting. And it added a lot to the experience. The staff is really nice and relaxed in a way that helps set the mood. A wonderful experience and highly recommended.
Tucked away in a quiet courtyard right off the main street, this place feels like a hidden escape before you even walk inside. The interior is super minimalist and dark, which immediately sets a moody, intimate vibe. If you love Japanese flavors, the food hits the mark completely. They use a lot of traditional fermentation techniques, and almost every dish is packed with that deep, savory umami and rich dashi. It feels incredibly authentic, and you can definitely tell why it is recommended by the Michelin guide. Well worth the visit and experience Japanese vegan food. Would love to visit again especially if they have seasonal menu changes.
An unforgettable dining experience in Berlin. As a visitor, I feel lucky to have discovered Oukan. The ambiance is absolutely beautiful, calm, elegant, and intimate, with every detail creating a very special atmosphere. The food and alcohol pairing were both outstanding, but what truly made the evening memorable was the team. The staff were incredibly professional, warm, and passionate about what they do. You can feel the care and dedication behind the entire experience. It was a real pleasure meeting them and enjoying such a unique evening. Easily one of the highlights of my time in Berlin. Highly recommended.
Overall, the experience was perfectly acceptable, though not particularly memorable. The restaurant presents an interesting concept and a thoughtfully curated setting; however, I do not believe it is somewhere I would choose to revisit. I have dined at a number of vegan establishments with far less theatricality, yet have found them considerably more satisfying in terms of both cuisine and overall experience. In this instance, the restaurant’s identity as “Japanese” did not come across convincingly at any point. Beyond the occasional use of ingredients such as soy or sake, there was little to evoke a genuine sense of Japanese cuisine, either in flavour or in concept. The food itself was rather neutral. Whilst there were a few interesting elements, it ultimately lacked distinction and failed to leave a lasting impression. The pairing experience, in particular, felt markedly disjointed. Beverages were served without clear explanation or any discernible relationship to the dishes. After the first two courses, I chose to discontinue the pairing, as it did not enhance the meal in any meaningful way. Each drink appeared to stand entirely on its own, without harmony or coherence with the food. Furthermore, the absence of traditional Japanese beverages — in favour of wines from various regions such as Romania and Northern Italy — only reinforced this sense of conceptual disconnect. That said, the service was excellent. The staff were attentive, professional, and genuinely committed to ensuring a pleasant experience. Dishes were explained in a calm and considered manner, both in English and German, which was greatly appreciated. It is evident that the level of service aligns well with the restaurant’s ambitions. In summary, whilst the concept may be of interest, I did not find the execution particularly faithful nor especially compelling from a culinary standpoint. It would not be my first recommendation, nor a place I would be inclined to return to.
A wonderful place for a quiet lovely evening with great food. I went to Oukan with my husband for a date and it was 10/10. A lot of unusual to us flavors, intresting ingredients and beautiful presentation. Very kind and professional service. Pleasant minimalistic interior. I would come back! Thank you.
