Das Gift

Das Gift is a clever play on words: in English, it's all about 'the present', but in German it means 'poison'. Luckily, the food menu at Das Gift is playfully called 'das Gegengift' (the antidote), so, with one of their delicious dishes in your belly, you'll be fine. Choose from Scottish smoked salmon, steak and ale pie, cheese plates, and of course... haggis. To wash it down, they have pretty much everything you could wish for, from an interesting assortment of  draught and bottled beers, and cider, to whisky or cocktails  Not content to rest on their laurels they have recently started bottling their own beers, with a few of their own creations avaible.

You'll probably dig the atmosphere here, it's charming and cosy with warm lights and comfortable chairs.  Opened a few years ago by artist Rachel Burns and her musician husband Barry (Mogwai)  it has quickly become a hit with both locals, expats and tourists alike.  Prior to the pair taking over, it had been a typical Berlin Pub.  Rather than gut the place and start from scratch, Rachel and Barry decided to incorporate existing elements like the dark wood paneling, the bar and even the slightly mangy stuffed birds! - Yep really!   This was a great decision, and gives the place so much character without the kitch or tackiness of many other newly opened pubs with their reproduction guinness signs

With Rachels background in art it seems natural that the former darts room out the back has been converted into a gallery space known as Giftraum.  Every Friday night sees the opening of a new exhibition from a mixture of local and international artists.  Along with the weekly changing exhibitions, Das Gift also run a regular Monday night pub quiz (in english of course), Thursday night free jukebox night and the weekend sees a lineup of local and international djs!
