Deutsches Historisches Museum
The photographer Stefan Moses (1928–2018) was one of the leading portrait photographers of the Federal Republic of Germany. His pictures of members of many different professional groups – always taken in open air in front of a grey cloth – earned him fame at the beginning of the 1960s. His early work, by contrast, is not well-known: reportages, mostly commissioned by magazines of the Kindler-Verlag in Munich, which Moses photographed from the 1950s on in Germany, Europe and overseas. In 1960 he moved to 'Stern' magazine, at the time famous for its reportages from around the world. In the end, these trips led him back to the 'exotic' Federal Republic, which fascinated him: Germany and the Germans became and remained the lifelong topic of his photography.
The exhibition will follow the photographer’s career, examine his view of people and present his early reportages and photographic essays, but also examples from his many famous portrait series, from the collections of the Deutsches Historisches Museum.
