Topography of Terror
The exhibition offers insight into the collaboration between photographers and a leading Nazi ideologist, who regarded photography as an adequate medium to forge and disseminate his racial ideology.
The identification with the ideal of the “Nordic race” was an integral part of National Socialist ideology. R. Walther Darré, Reich Minister for Food and Agriculture, made the peasantry the focal point of this concept. In 1935, he founded the “Reich School of the Reich Food Estate for Physical Exercises Burg Neuhaus,” for which young people from peasant families were recruited. Following Darré’s instructions, the Viennese photographer Anna Koppitz and the German sports photographer Hanns Spudich took numerous pictures of Neuhaus trainees for the popularization of the new image of the peasant in the media.
