Description
WIR SIND AM LEBEN is a new musical by Peter Plate and Ulf Leo Sommer, following their previous works such as Ku'damm 56 and Romeo & Julia – Liebe ist alles. The story takes place in Berlin in 1990, focusing on siblings Nina and Mario and their mother Rosie during the chaotic period after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Nina and Mario move from Wittenberg to Berlin in search of identity and music while joining a community running an improvised crisis hotline. Mario develops a romance with the Cuban dancer Nando, and Nina pursues a pop singing career amid a city dominated by techno music. Rosie, played by Steffi Irmen, returns unexpectedly to reconnect with her children, navigating a city marked by optimism, fear, and the realities of AIDS.
The musical balances drama with humor, reflecting the complexity of the 90s—combining sadness, joy, anger, and warmth. Developed in collaboration with Franziska Kuropka and Lukas Nimscheck, who also direct, the show features music by Plate, Sommer, and Joshua Lange. The choreography is by Jonathan Huor, known for Eurovision Song Contest 2025, and lighting by Tony Award-nominee Tim Deiling.
