第二次世界大戦で大きな被害を受けたヴォルクスビューネ劇場は、1950年から1954年までに再建されました。オスカー・カウフマンによるデザインは、かつての東ベルリン社会主義の共通のスタイルであり、元の指針は今日も実験劇場の形で残っています。 劇場は物議を醸す評判を持ち、その成功につながっており、メインホール、赤いサロン、緑のサロンの3つの演劇ステージを有しています。

2004年以降、劇場ではドイツ映画も上映されるようになり、政治、社会、芸術的な問題を反映したドイツ映画が注目されています。ドキュメンタリーやフィクション、ベルリン向けの実験的な映画など幅広いコンテンツが提供されています。
