ニコライ教会（セントニコラス教会）周辺は、ベルリン最古の地区とされ、現在までその姿を保っています。

教会自体は、第二次世界大戦後に完全に破壊されるなど、何度も再建され、スタイルが変えられてきました。

歴史上の多くの重要な出来事がこの教会で起こり、1809年にベルリン初の評議会が宣誓就任し、1991年の再統一後には初めて自由に選ばれたドイツ連邦議会の就任式が行われました。

2010年に教会は大規模な改装工事とリニューアルが行われ、現在はベルリンの文化シーンで貴重な存在となっています。入場料はオーディオガイド付きで€5、18歳以下は無料で、毎月第1水曜日は一日中無料入場できます。
