Description
This tour provides a broad view of the political and ideological forces that triggered genocide and global war in the 20th century, connecting Berlin’s turbulent past with its modern identity. Starting at Potsdamer Platz, once East Germany’s 'Death Strip,' you walk the former Berlin Wall path through Tiergarten Park, visiting the Holocaust Memorial and the Reichstag. The Reichstag’s glass dome, designed by Norman Foster, symbolizes Germany’s reunification and democratic values.
Next, you follow Napoleon’s route through the Brandenburg Gate and along Unter den Linden, Berlin’s royal boulevard. Stops include the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great and Bebelplatz, the site of the 1933 Nazi book burning, where you learn about Hitler’s rise to power. Passing Museum Island, you explore Berlin’s 19th-century cultural development.
The tour continues to Hackescher Markt with its pre-war courtyards, then Alexanderplatz, rebuilt in the 1960s as a showcase of East German governance and home to the TV Tower. The final stop is Checkpoint Charlie, the former crossing point between East and West Berlin, where the Cold War ended in 1989. Throughout, discussions highlight the lasting impact of Berlin’s East-West divisions and the city’s evolving identity.
