1936年のオリンピック競技会のために建設されたこのスタジアムは、第二次世界大戦中に被害を受けることなく残りました。2000年から2004年にかけて大規模な改装が行われ、その間に一つの座席の下で未爆発の爆弾が発見されました。現在、オリンピアスタディオンの収容人数は74,064人です。

記憶に残るイベントには、1936年にジェシー・オーエンスが4つの種目で金メダルを獲得したこと、そして2006年のFIFAワールドカップ決勝戦のフランス対イタリア戦があります。
