Description

Discover one of Berlin's most unusual housing estates – and a UNESCO World Heritage site that many Berliners themselves are not yet familiar with. A very special piece of architectural history is hidden in the southeast of Berlin: Gartenstadt Falkenberg, better known as the Tuschkastensiedlung. On a relaxed one-hour walk, we explore the colorful houses, small gardens, and winding paths of the estate and learn why the architect Bruno Taut experimented with a completely new concept of living more than 100 years ago. What to expect: We start at the Grünau S-Bahn station and walk together to Gartenstadt Falkenberg. As soon as you enter the estate, it becomes clear: Berlin suddenly looks completely different here. We discover the Akazienhof, the characteristic row houses, and the Gartenstadtweg, and take a closer look: why aren't the houses simply in straight rows? Why are the facades so unusually colorful? And why do the gardens and common spaces play such an important role here? We travel back to Berlin around 1910. The city is growing rapidly, and many people are living in difficult conditions in cramped tenements. The garden city movement is looking for an alternative: more light, air, greenery, private gardens, and yet a stronger sense of community. Bruno Taut took up these ideas and developed his own architectural language from them. We talk about his vision and why the First World War ultimately put a halt to the original ideas. Of course, there is also time to discover the many small architectural details – from colored facades and doors to the gardens and the unusual arrangement of the houses. This guided tour is ideal for anyone interested in architecture, urban history, Berlin Modernism, and unusual places away from the classic landmarks. You don't need any prior knowledge of architecture. I tell the story in an understandable, vivid way and with lots of little details, so that you'll see the settlement in a completely different light afterwards. Tour duration: approximately 1 hour Start & end: Grünau S-Bahn station Language: German Difficulty: easy Suitable for: adults, seniors, and small groups
