Description

Journey through time through Friedrichshain & Prenzlauer Berg: From the Ice Age to the underground Experience Berlin off the beaten tourist track on a spectacular tour that connects 25,000 years of history. Our tour starts in the historic area of the former central cattle market and slaughterhouse – a 'city within the city' that was active for over 100 years, once supplied the entire metropolis and is now a fascinating example of Berlin's constant change. From this industrial starting point, the walk will take you through the urban contrasts of Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg. We will trace the Ice Age roots of Berlin's glacial valley, explore the site of a vanished GDR swimming pool as an icon of socialist modernism, and delve deep into the dark chapters of the 20th century. The absolute highlight: The route takes us directly over two original bunkers from World War II. These former shelters now shape the cityscape as green-covered mounds of rubble, while Berlin's history remains tangibly close beneath their surface. Duration / length: Approx. 2 hours / 3 km (1.9 mi) easy walk Meeting point: E.g., 'Storkower Straße S-Bahn station (formerly the Central Cattle Yard)' Note for guests: E.g., 'Sturdy shoes recommended, as we will also be crossing historic parks and hills.' Start At the benches in front of the Mia Cao restaurant – Otto-Ostrowski-Straße 5 / S-Bahn and metro station Landsberger Allee For guests: Sturdy shoes are recommended, as we will also be crossing historic parks and hills.
