Description

On this half-day bike tour, we begin by crossing the bridge at Bornholmer Street - the site where, more than twenty years ago, Germans from both sides of the Berlin Wall were reunited. Riding past the hustle and bustle of the city’s fringe, we pedal our way to the beautiful area surrounding historic Schönhausen Palace, where the first president of the GDR had his official residence. We then head for Majakowskiring, a district where many members of the former East German government made their home. On the way back, we pass Bürgerpark – a large park with a beautifully gardened landscape which contains a small, artfully designed cemetery where important local personalities have been laid to rest. We then cycle past over 1400 cherry trees burst which mark a stretch of former no-man’s land in the era when Berlin was divided between East and West. The cherry trees here are a donation from the people of Japan, as a token of their joy at the reunification of Germany. Finally, the tour will end at the former East/West border at Bornholmer Street where your guide will provide you a mix of stories about this fascinating area.
