Description
Before Saad came to Berlin in 2015, he worked as a city tour guide for tourist groups in Damascus. Today, he offers a journey into Syrian culture and politics in the heart of Berlin-Neukölln. Saad is one of 13.8 million displaced persons who, according to the UNHCR, are fleeing the war inside and outside the country.
Along Sonnenallee, also known as 'Arab Street,' he shows cultural parallels and differences between Syria and Germany. He used to lead city tours in Damascus through Al-Nasr Street, which reminds him of Sonnenallee. By presenting everyday customs on the one hand and special traditions on the other, he brings his Syrian roots closer to his audience, explains background information, and dispels prejudices. In an accessible way, he illustrates how familiar, traditional foods and places create a sense of home without being able to replace the desire for one's actual homeland.
