Description

Discover the UNESCO Cultural Landscape on the Havel on a varied hike from castle to castle. Your tour begins at the Glienicke Bridge on the Berlin side. From here, the view sweeps far over the Havel and the Potsdam Cultural Landscape. During a brief introduction, you will learn how Prussia came into being and how its kings and princes, together with important architects and garden artists such as Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Peter Joseph Lenné, shaped this extraordinary cultural landscape. From the Glienicke Bridge, the path leads to Glienicke Palace, the former summer residence of Prince Carl of Prussia. During a tour of the palace, you will immerse yourself in the world of the Prussian royal family and learn more about Prince Carl, the architecture, and the idea of a landscape in which nature, gardens, and architecture come together. Afterwards, you will walk along the Havel through the historic park and cultural landscape towards Moorlake. Away from the crowds of visitors, idyllic paths along the water lead through a landscape that has been deliberately designed since the 19th century. Along the way, you will enjoy numerous views of the Havel and the parks and palaces on the opposite side. You will take a break at the historic Moorlake Inn and have time for a little refreshment in a special atmosphere. Afterwards, the hike continues through the Havel landscape to the ferry dock for Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island). You will take the ferry over to Peacock Island. On a walking tour, you will discover the romantic island with its old trees, historic gardens and, of course, its peacocks. Here, you will also encounter the personal stories of the Prussian royal family: Frederick William II and his long-time companion Wilhelmine Enke, later Countess of Lichtenau, as well as Frederick William III and Queen Louise, who remains famous to this day. A special highlight is the visit to the white palace on Pfaueninsel. Between royal representation and a private retreat, it becomes clear here how closely the landscape, architecture, and the personal lives of the Prussian rulers were connected. After the walking tour, you will take the ferry back to the mainland. The group tour ends at the ferry terminal. From here, you can take the bus directly to the Wannsee S-Bahn Station. This way, in one day, you will experience two palaces, Prussian history, UNESCO World Heritage, and one of the most beautiful Havel landscapes in Berlin and Potsdam, on foot and far from a classic city tour.
