Description

Join a 75-minute workshop at Maansi Jain’s studio in Berlin-Friedrichshain and explore drawing without relying on sight alone. Designed for non-artists, visitors, and curious groups, this session invites participants to work from touch, sound, memory, and bodily awareness rather than visual control. The process is simple, playful, and open to interpretation, with the focus on attention and discovery rather than technical perfection. The workshop begins with a welcome, a short introduction, and an example of the exercise. Participants may choose to close their eyes or wear a clean blindfold while listening to a sound, touching a safe object, or recalling a room from memory. Using paper and charcoal or crayons, they draw continuously for five minutes, allowing the hand to move without correcting for appearance. This first phase encourages participants to notice rhythm, pressure, and instinctive mark-making. In the second part of the session, participants open their eyes and add details to the drawing, responding to what has already appeared on the page. This creates a layered image shaped by both sensory intuition and later observation. The group then shares the finished works and reflects on what the body seemed to understand before the eyes stepped in. The activity finishes with a short group reflection and cleanup in the studio. Jain has guest lectured at New York University Steinhardt School of Art, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and has more than two decades of pedagogical experience.
