Description

Join a 75-minute drawing workshop at Maansi Jain’s studio in Berlin-Friedrichshain and explore what happens when observation matters more than accuracy. Designed for non-artists, visitors, and curious groups, this session uses blind contour drawing to shift attention away from correction and toward sustained looking. With simple materials and clear rules, participants create drawings that record the act of seeing rather than aiming for polished likeness. The workshop begins with a welcome, a short introduction, and an example of the process. Participants choose a simple studio object, their own hand, or, with consent, another participant’s face. The drawing tool is placed on the paper and then kept moving without lifting it until the drawing is complete. Throughout the exercise, participants keep their eyes on the subject instead of checking the page, tracing edges, folds, gaps, and changes of direction slowly and continuously. The session moves through three short rounds, beginning with an object, then a hand or self-portrait, and finally a partner portrait. As the drawings accumulate, participants begin to notice how line can capture attention, hesitation, and rhythm rather than literal resemblance. The finished works are displayed as records of concentrated looking and shared with the group before reflection and cleanup. The activity finishes with a short discussion in the studio. Jain has guest lectured at New York University Steinhardt School of Art, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and has more than two decades of pedagogical experience.
