Description
Learn why Berlin became the artistic magnet of Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and discover the city’s true “gallery mile” on a 3-hour art tour. In the company of an art historian guide, you will explore an innovative gallery scene from the Mitte to Potsdamer Straße, where about 30 galleries and art project spaces are scattered around the unpolished neighborhood.
Start your journey on the Auguststraße in Mitte, home to a wealth of galleries, such as the Kunst Werke, a contemporary art institution founded in the early 1990s. Visit intimate galleries, depending on their current shows. Then, take the subway to Potsdamer Straße. Over the last 5 years this strip has gained momentum as an enormous wave of gallerists moved from Mitte to the area south of the Neue Nationalgalerie.
The “gallery mile” includes renowned galleries, such as Esther Schipper, Isabella Bortolozzi, Gitti Nourbakhsch, Guido Baudach, Arndt, Plan B, Tanya Leighton, and Klosterfelde. Your guide will explain events that led to this flourishing; from the affordable rents to a semi-liberal climate and endless open spaces.
Visit unique venues in the gallery landscape, from small private initiatives hidden in obscure courtyards and basements, to established ventures and everything in between.
