Description
We start at the World Clock on Alexanderplatz and first ride through the East Berlin district of Friedrichshain. Here, the monumental buildings of the former Stalinallee, today's Karl-Marx-Allee, immediately catch your eye. These 'workers' palaces' represent the reconstruction after the Second World War II under socialist auspices and the cult of personality around Stalin. But they were also the center of the popular uprising in the GDR in 1953.
Continue along trendy clubs of Berlin's nightlife such as the Berghain or the Matrix around the East Side Gallery. This 'longest open-air gallery in the world' on the former Berlin Wall is home to the famous 'Brotherly Kiss' and other works by more than 100 artists. Where modern business towers, hotels, and the club scene now share the rare space on the banks of the Spree, the border area with the death strip used to be.
Kreuzberg is on the other side of the Spree. No other Berlin district stands so much for multiculturalism, the Turkish community, and the alternative political Berlin with its squats, the riots on the revolutionary May 1st, and a left-alternative protest culture. A failed housing policy, gentrification, and rising rents still shape the district today. Here you'll learn about the rapid growth of the city in the 19th century, facilities such as Markthalle IX and the Bethanien Hospital, and how the squatting of the 70s/80s ultimately preserved the substance of the Wilhelminian buildings. The band Ton-Steine-Scherben and their frontman Rio Reiser provided the soundtrack for alternative Kreuzberg.
