Description
Nikolaiviertel may appear like a quaint medieval neighborhood, but there’s more than meets the eye. Most of its charming buildings were rebuilt after World War II using socialist-era pre-fabricated materials. Despite this, it remains a perfect backdrop to explore Berlin’s rich Christmas history.
Our tour takes you on a journey through time, starting with the arrival of Christianity in Berlin and the blending of early Christmas traditions with pagan customs. You’ll learn how the holiday evolved through Prussian times, the Industrial Revolution, and the political regimes of the 20th century.
We’ll also explore how different social classes celebrated Christmas in the past. From the department stores where the wealthy shopped to the humble celebrations of Berlin’s working class, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how this festive season has shaped the city’s culture.
And since Christmas is a time for ghost stories, we’ll finish with a chilling tale of a ghost that still haunts the Kurfürstenhaus, one of the few original buildings in the area.
The tour concludes at a cozy mulled wine stand, where you can enjoy a cup of the traditional 'Feuerzangenbowle' Glühwein by the picturesque Nikolaikirche.
