Description

Starting at the area around Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz you can discover the hidden layers of Berlins most touristic neighborhood. Berlin's only preserved old town is not located in the centre, but right next to it. The neighbourhood around the Hackesche Höfe attracts the most tourists alongside the Brandenburg Gate. But visitors only discover the true secrets of the so-called Spandauer Vorstadt when they wander through the hidden courtyards, parks and small squares. A lively art and gallery scene has developed in the former Jewish Scheunenviertel district, which is now home to old factories and narrow gaps between buildings with strikingly high-quality architecture. Countless small shops, restaurants, advertising agencies and architectural firms are driving gentrification and refining the labyrinthine neighbourhood with its winding streets and hidden courtyards. Right in the middle is the famous Volksbühne, built at the beginning of the 20th century and still one of the most influential theatre stages today. Architecturally framed by residential buildings designed by the famous father of modernism: Hans Poelzig.
