An unusual setting in a former women’s prison — atmospheric and unexpected. Excellent wine pairings, thoughtfully crafted dishes, and a cosy bar where you’ll want to linger a little longer.

We came here after reading multiple positive reviews. However, Lovis didn’t live up to the expectations: although the ambience is quite nice, the food was a bit disappointing. We had the 6 course menu (€99): of all the dishes, probably one or two were worth noting - the broccoli and the soup. We felt that all the other plates were either not balanced or just not up there: the chicken soup was overly salty, the lamb shoulder quite heavy and paired with an odd barbecue sauce, the dessert a mix and match of different flavours with a washed out fruity liquid. Service wise, front of house was excellent but waiting time among servings was super slow. We were expecting way more for €100+ per person. Honestly, we would not recommend it

Such a miss that such a beautiful location with an historic past and a big hype as we understand serves for such a pour dining experience. We were a couple for dinner on a Saturday night, ordered the 6 courses vegetarian menu with the wine paring (which was good except of the dessert wine) and beside 1 or 2 dishes we haven’t really liked or even was half decant including some of them that was not good. We sat in the “aquarium” area which is the best place to be seated from our understanding but the service throughout the evening wasn’t even close to what we expected. It took them well over 40 min to start serving food from the time we’ve ordered and we had to remind the waiter over and over again for things such as water, silverware etc. For such a pricey experience we expected more.

Lovis is definitely one of the most romantic restaurants in Berlin, the perfect place to take a special person. The service was excellent and very friendly, and conspired with me to arrange a small surprise for my date. There is plenty of space for each table, giving you a sense of a private bubble just for the two of you. Lovis is located in a former women’s prison that has been very beautifully and intimately redesigned, with candlelight, lush greenery even in fall, and exposed brick. The atmosphere is the primary reason to visit at least once if you’re in Berlin. Most of the dishes were delicious, but at this price point in fine dining, I would have expected a higher standard of quality and creativity. The tomato tartare was my favorite dish, outstanding and surprisingly citrusy with a variety of complex flavors and textures. However, the mushroom soup seemed like a straightforward and basic dish I could have prepared at home, and I’m skeptical the ingredients were local. The menu is largely vegetarian, and I would recommend sticking to vegetarian dishes since that is clearly the chef’s specialty. The meat dishes were underwhelming; both my steak and the accompanying sauce really lacked seasoning. Overall the experience was still excellent and I will come again to experience the varying seasonal menus, but the price is more justified by the atmosphere than the food.
