Description
Berlin's southern Tiergarten district holds a complex history. Once a lively area with dancing bears on Potsdamer Platz and nightlife in Haus Vaterland, it attracted artists, writers, designers, and wealthy industrialists, many of whom were Jewish. From January 1933, the neighborhood faced exile, suicide, deportations, and systematic demolition tied to Albert Speer's plans for 'Germania.'
After a period of silence and destruction, the area gradually revived with excavators marking the return of music, literature, and art institutions. This district reflects Berlin's ongoing evolution, with new museums being constructed amid debates and local stories involving everything from illegal distilleries to personal dramas and dedicated builders. Visitors experience firsthand the layered history and cultural rebirth in this part of the city.
