Berlin Wall Memorial - Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer
February 5, 2018 marks the date when the Berlin Wall was gone for the same amount of time that it divided the city and the world from 1961 to 1989: 28 years, 2 months, and 27 days.
In the exhibition, held at the visitors center of the Bernauerstrasse Berlin Wall Memorial, each year between 1961 and 2018 is represented by a single image.
Most of the 58 pictures are private photographs from the Berlin Wall Foundation’s collection that have never before been published. The photographs show unfamiliar perspectives on German-German identity in the shadow of the Wall. Their focus is not on the political events of history, but instead on largely unknown views and unusual details.
The photographs trace the development of the Wall over the years and reveal the changes taking place in the city along the former border strip. Emphasis is on the different locations and people in the city’s center as well as on its outskirts. The photographs are a testimony to everyday life in East and West Berlin during the period of division as well as to the political tensions and remembrance politics of the time.
